PDF Promotes scalable solutions on means to strengthen access to sustainable Water Supply and improved Sanitation and hygiene facilities and services. The work has been involving designing and implementation of rural and urban pro-poor water supply schemes with context-appropriate or adapted technological options, providing technical assistance to both water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) line Ministries, regional and district Government and utilities on developing Policies, strategies, guidelines and district wide plans for water, sanitation and hygiene, test commercial models for water, sanitation and hygiene services for the poor and providing technical assistance and developing capacities of water supply management bodies.

For the past 9 years, PDF has facilitated construction of 18 water supply infrastructures in schools and healthcare facilities benefiting 1,106,159 people composed of 564,897 women and 541,262 me. A number of infrastructures has been constructed including boreholes, gravity and solar powered water supply systems.

On sanitation and hygiene, 110 villages have been verified and certified as open defection free (ODF) at level one and two. 2,492 CLTS committees have been formed and trained on follow up and ODF verification protocols, 366,291 households composed of 1,831,455 people built and are using improved toilets. Likewise, they installed hand washing facilities and are practising hand washing with soap, water treatment and safe storage hygiene behaviours. Those households are inhabited by 1,831,455 individuals of which 918,820 are women while 912,635 are men.  2,677 under five children are playing in safe grounds and their faeces are safely managed.

In schools, a total of 13,450 school children composed of 7,250 boys and 6,200 girls are accessing improved sanitation, hygiene and menstruation services. These pupils benefited from120 new user friend improved toilets blocks that have been constructed in 40 primary schools with 600 stances of which 310 stances are for girls and 290 for boys. Additionally, each school received connection to water supply depending on available sources. In most cases schools were connected to piped gravitated water and boreholes that have been constructed through PDF and donor supported programs. In these schools, 40 school clubs have been formed and are active. Empowered school children are ambassador of improved sanitation and hygiene behaviours in their communities and their schools.

In unplanned settlements, PDF promotes a business model for addressing waste challenges. Enterprises are empowered to collect solid and liquid wastes and dispose them in designated areas. For liquid waste, we design and construct Decentralized Waste Water Treatment system that are commissioned to the Water Utility and managed by enterprises.

WASH programs are supported by various partners including UNICEF, Plan International, USAID/WARIDI, DFID/HDIF and WaterAid.
